Bodrum, blessed with the love of Aphrodite
As a place where people have lived continuously for thousands of years, Bodrum (its ancient name is Halicarnassus) is an important site for historians and an attractive holiday destination for tourists.
Halicarnassus, where Herodotus “The Father of History” (484-420 BC) was born, was founded by the Dorians in about 1000 BC. In the 6 th century BC, a Persian administrator called Hecatomnos set up a dynasty that carried his name and reigned the region for more than 50 years. One of the most talented members of this dynasty was his son Mausolos. After he built edifices in the cities of this region, he decided to build a monumental building where he would be commemorated in the way he deserved after his death. This building called Mausoleum, which could only be finished after his death, was later one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Towards the end of the 13 th century Halicarnassus was taken by Sultan Beyazıt of the Ottoman Empire. In 1402, St. Jean Knights wanted a place to build another castle, so they were given Halicarnassus. As the St. Peter Castle was used as jail at last and the prisoners were kept in basement dungeon (basement means “Bodrum” in turkish) the city got its actual name.
Bodrum Today begins an hour before dawn as the night time silence is broken, from the minaret’s heights, by the rhythmical wailing of the muezzin summoning the faithful to the first of the day’s five calls to pray. For many others it is a call to bed, as they wend their way home at the close of Bodrum’s active night life. This contrast perhaps signifies Bodrum’s uniqueness and diversity as a holiday resort, offering on the one hand water sports, excellent shopping, dining, while at the same time maintaining its cultural and historical heritage. Day or night, summer or winter, Bodrum has it all.
